Student reviews of Alan Campion

Review from a student who took CH 304K
Campion has an awesome personality that keeps you awake and interested. He posts his notes on Blackboard, which make is fairly easy to study. What I love most about Professor Campion is his grading technique. He considers an 85 an A and a D is actually a C. This is probably because his exams are somewhat difficult, however it is nothing he won't go over in class. He also assigns optional homework from time to time that counts as extra credit towards your FINAL grade. With these things said, he loves his job and really, really cares about his students.
Review from a student who took CH 301
His course is most suitable for people who have already taken AP Chemistry and made a good grade on that (4 or 5) but just chose not to claim the credit. Often times he will say "you guys learned this in high school over and over so I'm just going to skim over it" He likes to explain things in a very robotic manner sometimes that makes concepts confusing that should not be confusing.

He's a nice guy but...the teaching isn't good. He says he really enjoys "winging the lectures" and doing everything "on the fly." Which is code for he does'nt have his act together. I think he's only done one problem on the board that actually worked out. He starts working them, gets confused, and then says something like "Oh well....it's in your book." And some of the stuff in the class is sort of challenging and new, even haven taken the AP Chem test, so it would be NICE to have a teacher who...oh, I don't know...TEACHES?? He's kind of an interesting professor I suppose but....he like stops and dances at cell phone rings and I'm like...TEACH THE DAMN CLASS!! Pleeeease! I want to LEARN!! It's not TOO hard to make good grades in his class, but just....ugh. If you can avoid him, do, but he's not the woooorst teacher ever.
Review from a student who took ch 305
campion is a horrible professor. he is very unfair and his tests are VERY arbitrary. i have 100 hours at UT and a 4.0 and this nonmajor chemistry class was the hardest A to earn. avoid campion like the plague, he is BAD news.

Horrible professor. He does not teach during his lectures and often times confuses himself while teaching, which in turn totally confuses his students. Stay away from Campion at all costs. Take Murray if you can who is a great chemistry professor.
Review from a student who took CH 304K & CH 305
I had Campion for both CH 304K & CH 305. I enjoyed him more in 304k than in 305. He seemed to all of a sudden turn on us on the last two out of four midterm exams. Class averages dropped after taking those last two exams. He does give a cummalative final which isn't too difficult because it is composed of the exact same questions from homeworks and midterm exams. Campion's grading scale is 85-100:A, 70-84:B, 50-69:C, 40-49:D, <40: F. This definitely helped me get an A! Highly recommended!
Review from a student who took CH 353 and 354
Campion is a good teacher. He has been at the University forever and really cares about the students. His tests are fair, but due to the nature of the material it is hard. Howver he cares about the students and really does take an interest into there well being. I would definitely advise taking him over Kohl or Broadbelt if possible.
Review from a student who took CH 304k
He is a great teacher. He posts all his lecture notes online and he really tries to make sure everyone knows the material. There are 3 tests and then the final. Lowest test grade is dropped. He counts 85% and above as an A. HW counts as a total of 15 extra credit points (out of 300). The HW has been fairly simple and is submitted online. Also, the course book (Chemistry in Context) has problems at the end of each chapter that can really help you study for the tests. He is a real fun guy and the class has been really easy for me so far. I have As on the first two tests and I think I'm going to be set for an A for the semester. I would really recommend Campion.
Review from a student who took Che 305
THE WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD AT UT. -His lectures are incoherent -He insults students when they ask questions -He uses 5 different platforms and half of them cost money He is really smart, I don't doubt it. But he is NOT meant to teach. He should be ejected from the classroom effective immediately. He devalues my degree more and more with every lecture. I don't understand why he's allowed to teach. Just put him in a lab or something.
