Student reviews of Jerry Brand

Review from a student who took BIO 211
Brand is a pretty difficult professor. If you take him be prepared to study A LOT. Since there are only 2 tests and a final you have to cover a ton of material for each exam and the questions can be really in depth. Make sure to memorize the powerpoint slides he posts on the web after each lecture. The main thing that I didn't like about this class was that you could take great notes, read all the chapters and study really hard but still not be prepared enough for the exam. He likes to make his exams challenging by putting extremely specific things but only because hes really passionate about biology and wants his students to learn. It's not impossible to make an A but you really have to work for it.

Dr. Brand's class is very hard to describe. If all you want is to get a C or a B without doing much (only 4 multiple choice exams total in class, no homework or quizes) then take him and and cram a couple days before each test. The big difference comes in getting an A. Dr. Brand does not curve at all. You get what you get. The difference in effort from a B to an A is gigantic. It is almost proportional from the difference between a 0 and a 70. He doesn't give very many. The reason for this is because 2 questions on every exam are extremely specific and there is so much material that you will probably get these on chance if at all. That leaves only around 2 questions you can miss legitamatley and get an A. I will not lie, I crammed the night before on all the exams and my grade all came down to the final exam. I got an A, but barely. This course is like memorizing the dictionary so be prepared. If your a good student and like to study a lot (4+ hours a day) then you might actually find Brand easy. If your a smart guy, but dont like to work very hard, then and A will be tough, trust me I know.

Brand is a very intelligent guy, but he doesn't seem too interested in teaching. His lectures were pretty boring, but he teaches the material and he puts the important notes online. The tests are hard, but he only gives two midterms, and a chance to drop one with a makeup.

Brand is alright. His notes are on the web, but after he lectures over them. I never really understood that, but anyways, he has two test and an optional makeup test for everyone. His tests are 30% each and his final is 40%. I made A's on both my tests but because of the final I got a B in the class. His lectures are pretty dry and boring, but he really wants the students to learn.

Flat out, Dr. Brand is boring, and simply listening to his lectures will not get you an A. However, if you put in the time and effort, you can do well. He doesn't try to trick you, or anything like that. Basically, the material is hard, but he does what he can to make it easier (though it doesn't help much). If you take this class, read the book and study. It is an easy B or C, not A.
