best organic prof out there. hard tests, but it's not very difficult to get an A. A is 75 and above. i got 78, 70 and 65 on my midterms and something on final and ended up with A in class. he is a jerk but you learn alot.

I went into this class scared because I'd heard that his tests were killer, he picked on people during class, and that he made a girl cry during office hours. But in fact, it's just the opposite (or what I've experienced at least). His lectures are very organized and he drills the material into your head. Some friends of mine that had him for 1st semester organic still refer back to their notes b/c they're so thorough. It's true he's sarcastic and mocking but it's never gotten so bad to be offensive. I've gone to his office hours several times, and he was ALWAYS very helpful/friendly. The tests are challenging of course and require you to apply your knowledge of the material 110%. Practicing with old tests helps a lot. Curve is 75 and up=A.

Ok, if u take organic II with meyer, then you better remember what went down in organic I, because if u dont, its gonna be rough. Even so, he is a great professor, you really learn the stuff, but remember, he loves to mock you...and his tests are killer...beware of the Chef!!

I would seriously think twice about taking this course if I were you. His lectures are good, and make the material seem easy, and then the tests are EXTREMELY difficult. Plus, he's not exactly the friendliest professor I've had...in fact, he's the only professor I have that I'm not comfortable approaching. He could be a really excellent professor if he was a little friendlier and the tests were more reasonable, but for some reason he chooses not to be. So, in less you are a chemistry major and are really in love with organic chemistry, I would not recommend taking this class.

I had Meyer for both semesters of organic and I really enjoyed the class. His lectures are one of the best given by any professor I've had. He tells you lots of little stories and isn't afraid to speak his mind about a subject matter even those not dealing with organic. You can tell he really knows his stuff because of the amount of detail he goes into addressing the why's and how's of reactions, meachanisms, etc. His personality isn't too great and after the first week or so, you'd probably be too scared to ask any questions or answer any of his questions during class because more than likely he'll make you look like the class clown. He seems a bit intimidating and he is but as an organic professor he's the best. I've heard a lot about Iverson, Krische, and others but Meyer really teaches you this stuff and isn't just an easy A. The curve is huge but then again, his tests are pretty mind draining. Memorizing his notes will get you about a D on his tests because his tests are all about application to some wierd things you've never ever seen before. A 75 is an A and it's not as easy as it sounds. Bottom line, if you wanna really learn organic and use it later on, take Meyer. If you're absolutely about the GPA and getting A's, get someone else.

Meyer has really good lectures but his exams are brutal! For instance the class average on our third exam was around a 20. He is also not an easy professor to approach, so unless you have no other choice do NOT take his class.

Before taking Organic Chemistry, I had heard NOT to take Meyer's class, but I thought that it would not be as bad as most people said it was. It WAS. Meyer's CH 618A (610A for non-engineers) class was rough. I devoted my entire semester to passing the class. The only positive thing I took from the class was an incredible (and potentially useless) knowledge of Organic Chemistry. If you're a Pre-Med major, his students do remarkably better on the Organic section of the MCAT than any other professor. I still don't recommend him. His tests are terribly specific, horribly long and you can't even ask the proctors for clarification on questions. His office hours are short and although he's helpful, he's just as unapproachable as he is during class. Just don't take him, he's not worth the trouble.

I've just read all the other reviews on this prof... seriously guys, he's not as bad as some of these reviews make him out to be. yes, his tests are HARD, yes he can be unapproachable at times, but you LEARN A LOT, you have no choice but to learn. If you keep up and do the work (which I personally didn't, I always crammed the weekend before the test and went to the TA's reviews) you should be ok. You gotta real devote some time for this class tho, but you won't regret taking him - he's a GREAT lecturer. And go to office hours (preferrably the TA's)..

Meyer's organic class is the hardest chemistry class ever! Even though 75 is A, it's very very very difficult to score anywhere near that. He is a decent lecturer, but his tests are bloody! If you want to maintain your gpa or if you're taking other hard classes, definitely choose another professor (iverson, krische, anslyn, etc). Besides that, i think Meyer is not very friendly and i got scared going to his office hour.....

look. i took this man twice, failing the first time, and then receiving a C the second time. BUT i would still recommend him above all the other profs for the pure and simple fact that you learn alot from this man and that even though his tests are worse than getting hit with a baseball bat in the ^*&%, they are designed to challenge a person to take the most out of o-chem. give this man a chance (but only approach the TA's for anything but chem ?'s!) and you will know so much organic, the facts will ooze out of your head. i STILL remember his stuff even after 4 semesters

Meyer has a very abrasive personality, especially with the first semester class. He's a little gruff if you go into office hours, but he'll treat you with a little more respect if you show up regularly (every other week or so) even if you think you're asking stupid questions. Word is, he's THE professor to take if you're going to take the MCAT or going on to take anything that requires any real understanding of o'chem. His class is a lot more work than most students are used to and the tests require not only memorizing everything he presents in lecture, but understanding it and being able to apply it to crazy things you've never seen before. The good thing is: Meyer gives the best lectures of any professor I've had at UT and he is always prepared. Making an A is not impossible, but it takes consistent work. you can't cram and expect to pass. There is no graded homework. three exams (20% of final grade each) and a final (40% of final grade). Don't let his rough demeanor get to you, he's actually a nice guy. (Don't tell him I told you or he'll probably try to give me a retroactive "F".)
