Review from a student who took ch369
This guy has the most irritating voice, some stupid new zealand accent. He's super boring and his class sucks. Avoid this guy i'd say - there's gotta be someone better. Each test covers around 150-200 pages jam packed with material and he picks the most minor details to ask on the test. Also he likes to put questions from the enrichment readings in the boxes at the top of the pages. What really made me not like this guy is He asked whoever had trouble after the first test to talk to him, well i emailed him and the TA and after two weeks i didn't hear back from either. He doesn't seem like he gives a damn

Nice and funny guy, even at office hours. Fair teacher and grader, makes the course fun. He has an accent but you can still understand him and learn a lot from him. Also, try to take CH 369 instead of CH 339K if you can bc it's a much better course (and easier).

Kitto makes you want to learn biochem..he's very understanding, is very nice in office hours, actually wants to help you learn, and has fair tests and grading (pretty big curves too, but you may not even need it). He does have an accent but you can still understand him.

When I took Kitto's course in Fall 2011 his grading structure was 3 exams and a required final worth 21.25% each. He had homework through sapling learning and counted your best 15 homework grades worth 10% of your total grade. Attendance was required and influenced this through iclicker questions worth 5% of your grade. He would give you one point for answering the iclicker question even if you got the answer wrong. If you attend at least 80% of the time then you would get the complete 5%. His lectures are horrible and his powerpoint presentations are just pictures from the book. I came to class learned absolutely nothing. I studied for this class by reading each chapter, marking details in the book, and outlining important topics in the chapter. He will ask you the most subtle details from the book. Never went to office hours because it was the same as attending his lectures. This professor likes to hear himself talk and brag about his past accomplishments in graduate school, his research, and so on. I would recommend that you attend the review session before the test hosted by the TAs. Kitto specifically tells the TAs what is on the test and is a good way to get ahead of other students. Never attended the PEER group sessions and am unaware of how useful they were. The exams are difficult and was always hoping for the curve to help me. He curves each test average to 75, but does not curve negatively if the average is higher than 75. I was an engineer taking this class and I could careless and somehow ended up with a B in the class. If you are a pre-med student then I HIGHLY recommend taking another professor for this class. I have heard that Hoffman is a very good professor with better grade distributions than Kitto. Get on a waitlist for him if he is teaching...his class fills up fast. If you are stuck with him then good luck and stay on top of this class.
