I thought this was a really hard class. There was a test every other week and you have to go to class becuase part of your grade is him randomly asking you questions. The tests are open book and he covers alot of material, so its pretty hard to study. I felt like he tried to pick very obscure things to ask on the test that I never felt were important enough to study in detail. If you can avoid taking him, I would.

Dr. Appling was ok. The test averages are low (around the 50's) but the good news is that he sets the average at about a B (which is good). It seems pretty easy to get a B. I barely studied for the tests and managed to pull off the class average. Dr. Applings downfall would be his teaching. I fell asleep most of the time because of his monotonic teaching style. I wasn't alone. About 10% of the class fell in with me. My friend and I used to place bets at the begining of class to see which student would fall asleep first. He actually includes everything in his lecture notes so you could get away with not going to class. I've known people to skip class entirely and just study hard for the test and do really well. Overall, I'm a B student and well, I'm pretty sure I got a B in the class (but just barely). I rate Dr. Appling as an easy B or C if you don't mind falling asleep in class. Also, The book can be helpful (diagrams) but don't get the one the Co-op sells. It's overpriced for the value.

DONT TAKE APPLING. His test are impossible. The average grade on our last exam was a 50.1 and he told us that we all need to "step up to the plate" like it ws our fault. If you do take him, Dont buy the book. IT has nothing to do with his lectures. Good Luck.

Dr. Appling totally changed his curriculum the semester I took it. 6 exams (1 dropped), a project, and a mandatory final. About 20% of your grade will be answering 2-4 questions that he will ask you in class, which means you HAVE to go to class. He hasn't assigned the project yet, so I couldn't really give my opinion on that. His exams are completely open source, so it's really hard to study for his exams. They're very analytical, and he can grade pretty specifically on the short answer. They're pretty fair topics though, not too bad. His lectures are a little dull...pretty much a summary of what you need to know from the book (which is HUGE by the way). Sometimes he does like to throw in interesting tidbits though. This class just requires a lot of time since you basically have an exam every other week.
