Student reviews of Hyigyung Kim

Review from a student who took BIO 212
She's good in that she's interested in her students. She expects a lot from her classes though and does go slow in her lectures. I think we were 2 or 3 sections behind so we didn't learn all that we should have. She wasn't really productive with her one hour class. When someone asks a question, it took her quite a while to explain it which is probably why we were so behind. She'll want you to interact with her but it's tough when there's only an hour for her to lecture. She's easy to approach and very attentive towards her students. Her tests are tricky and she'll ask questions that she didn't quite cover completely in class. Go to office hours.

Dr. Kim was ok throughout the year and I did good on her tests, but watchout for the final!! She told us that it would be easy, just study the old tests and we'd be fine. I did that plus re-read the book and classnotes...I absolutely bombed the final, and blew my A in the class. There were several questions that went into more depth than she and the book did, and 30% of the final was material from the last 1.5 weeks of class- three class lectures-which were useless in my mind as she went on several 10 min. long tangents. I didn't think it was a fair final at all. Think twice about taking Dr. Kim.
Review from a student who took BIO 325
I think Dr. Kim is a really nice person and she is always willing to help. Her english is not very good which sometimes makes her lectures difficult to understand. Her exams actually are not too difficult, if you read and understand the book and go to class, you will get your A.

She seemed nice enough at the beginning of class, but her lectures are really hard to understand because she has difficulty with her english sometimes. She goes very slow in lectures, painfully slow. Her tests aren't that difficult, but she sometimes have very confusing questions on them because of the way she chooses to word them. She's not terrible, but she's worse than neutral to me.
Review from a student who took BIO 301M
She seemed very willing to always help and was very nice. However, her English makes lectures very hard to follow. She trys to make up for it by repeating things and asking if the class understands, but it is still a challenge. The tests weren't too bad. I made a B without studying very much.

I really liked this professor. She seemed to really be interested in the progress of her students. She was more interested in if her students learned something, rather than how well they did on the tests. The tests are pretty hard but studying the book rarely helped. What really helped is that she posted her notes online and in class you could just follow along in the outline. I made a B in this class with a moderate amout of studying/effort.
