Once I noticed that the lectures were almost exactly duplicate material from the book (which he wrote), I started feeling like going to lectures was very much optional. For the most part thats true but you wont get by if you dont either go to class or read those chapters. If Selma is still his TA, you will have to get used to vague and sometimes difficult programming assignments. However, if you turn SOMETHING in by the deadline, you can reason out a 70-100 grade for something that may not even work when you show it to her.

Garg is knowledgable and a nice guy. This is a good class to take for people interested in a career in software, or for people who enjoy algorithms, or for people who just want to learn java. I learned a lot in this class, but to be successful, I would recommend starting the programming assignments early. They aren't that hard anyway, and there was only 3. Also, I would definitely suggest reading the material before going to lecture, then taking good notes. The lecture corresponds directly to the book, which he wrote.

Yea, he's a really nice guy. Since he teaches from the book, it is easy to take learn and take notes in his class. Pretty interesting class and good prof.

If you are interested in learning how to rigidly design distributed algorithms and are good at discrete maths, this is the course to take. However if you just want to learn what is the distributed system, get to know some distributed algorithms and do a few implementations, AVOID IT AT ALL COST. Just audit it. Otherwise you will be boring as hell and full of regrets at the end of the semester.
