Student reviews of Brian Doherty

Review from a student who took E 316K
His world lit. class was fascinating. We some a few really good independent films for his class. The readings were numerous, some were good, but other ones were extremely long and boring. I remember his tests being extremely confusing, so that is the main fault of this course. Also, when I took the course there were no readings from East Asia, so that was rather disappointing. Other than that, its a decent course of interest..

His lectures are interesting. There is a lot of reading, but most of it is not too boring & he discusses everything. He incorporates the class during the lectures (he does this student-of-the-day thing) and he is very liberal about the material. We acted out a satirical skit, which got complained about to the department for its content (namely, the use of a certain word) ;) but it was relevant & emphasized the actual literature.

Doherty is an enigmatic speaker and knows how to successfully shine light on texts without holding your hand through it step by step. He is fun and creative in class and has a great sense of humour.

Overall a rewarding course. Unlike most World Lit professors, Doherty actually covers more than just the classics and old dead white guys. Unfortunately, it would seem that this is not received favorably from the p2 powersthatbe. He is not afraid to let conversation deviate from the course material (a refreshing view). Occasional quizzes when he thinks not enough people have been reading the assignments.

Doherty has an awesome personality. Great lectures but heavy readings. His lectures complement the readings assuming you've already read the material prior to class. If you're not the type who prepares before class, I suggest you do not take Doherty. He gives suprise quizzes, and the ones you download and turn in. I really hate reading, but this class really motivated me for some odd reason. Honestly, I was only planning to wing it and take a C, and hell, I might even get a pretty good grade! It really also depends on your TA, I was extremely lucky to get a stoner. She's cool though!

Really, a great teacher with rockin' lectures and bitchin' reading assignments. Ok, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but I have to say that I really enjoyed the course: as an engineering student it was really nice to get to spend some time on something other than math and science for once, and Doherty made it almost completely painless. Some of the reading can be a bit dry if you aren't really into that thing (ie death in venice, etc) but some of the selections are really inspired. That said don't take the course if you don't want to go to the lectures or read a lot, but if you like literature at all, there really won't be any problem at all with motovation.
