Not the best professor, but the TA was excellent. The tests are all essay, and the essays are given before hand so you can prepare your answers. Each test is 25% of your grade then a final paper(no final exam) is also worth 25%. If you don't mind being spit on, and you can decifer his slurred language then the lectures might be worthwhile. Otherwise, if you do the readings and attend section then it's an easy A.

Phillips isn't that bad as a professor. He has a tendency to repeat himself over and over in lectures, but if you zone out and doodle on your notes, it's not that bad. He outlines all the readings and lectures, so if you miss a class, it's not that big of a deal (though some of the outlines make no sense on their own). I would definitely recommend going to discussion. My TA did a great job decoding the lectures and pulling out the ideas we really had to understand. Besides, they do all the grading, so if you know what they're looking for, the class is really easy. The tests aren't that hard (3 in-class essays w/ some quote matching; the lowest test is dropped and replaced by your final paper, which is a re-write of one of your essays) if you do the readings, and all the possible essay questions are given to you in advance. It's really not that hard to get an A; just go to section, sit through the lectures, and enjoy Phillips semi-wackiness.

Bad lecturer but good class IF and ONLY IF you get a good TA. Everyone that had my TA did pretty good if they put in minimal effort, but everyone hated the other TA. Take your chances and you could end up making an easy A. Class isn't really worth going to but make sure and attend the TA sessions.

There are not any objective tests or assignments in this class. Homework essays and tests are graded by different TAs and grades are rather subjective. Although there isn't much homework in this class, there isn't much you can do to ensure that you make a good grade in this class. Philosophy should be interesting. Pick another class.

This course could have used an organized textbook. Text was picked from random books and chapters. The professor was very hard to follow and the grading procedures are unsatisfactory. It seemed like every TA had a different idea of what a good paper consisted of.

He's really boring in lecture, just rambles and has no concept of time bc he always let us out late. There's really no point in going to the class, because he puts all the notes online. But if you do go and participate in his "discussions" he'll add 3 pts. to your final grade. You have 3 in class essay tests, and then a final paper which is a rewrite of one of the previous exams. The discussion sessions at the end of the week are a must, bc the TA's can decipher Phillips' babble, and they grade your papers anyway, so if anything just go to those. As bad as the class was, it's an easy A if you attend the dicussion sessions.

Good Professor, and interested in his students opinions. He sometimes tries to force his opinions on the class. He grades very fairly, but gives too many reading assigments.
