Student reviews of Edwin Allaire

Review from a student who took PHL 312
Allaire is humorous, interesting guy. He is clearly very intelligent and well-versed in current politics. Unfortunately, the manner in which he teaches may make it difficult for some people to learn. He lectures and does examples on the blackboard but seems uninterested in changing the fact that 50% of his students fail the class each time he teaches it. The class requires a lot of self-motivation, as no assignments are collected. Nonetheless, they are certainly a requirement for a good test performance. Good luck!

Old style teacher - 2 midterms %25 each, comprehensive final %50 (all essay questions). Lectures do not include visual aids and can get boring. You will get lost if you don't do the readings (the only hw/assignments given). Allaire seems to yearn for more class participation/discussion and is bothered by the lack of it... & by the amount of people sleeping. However he has a funny sense of humor which finds its way into the lectures. Grading depends on TA. Make sure you get an active discussion group (Warren rocks)!
Review from a student who took 301
Edwin Allaire thought himself to be the proud possessor of the smartest asshole in all of human history, and he frequently used it on his fellow man. He was arrogant and combative, and he had a keen mind. While I admire his passionate commitment to political issues of the day, I cannot say to have admired his personality. He knew how to tear you down but not how to build you up. It as blistering critique all the way with Ed. He was a live volcano looking for any excuse to erupt. If he's made it into heaven, he is undoubtedly dissecting the theological improbability of the place--and poor old God is just shaking His head in amusement. Allaire is also of course questioning the Archangel Michael as to why he entertains such a militaristic attitude. Well, they've got the POS now, so there.

Have I got one for you about this guy. I went to him in the hopes of improving my writing for his class. He called me into his office along with some other students. He took my paper and proceeded to criticize it in front of everyone. He could be a cold blooded son of bitch frankly.
