Review from a student who took EE 345L
Valvano is a little weird. He's an unkempt, sporadic man. In 345L, he expects a lot of your time. The class was very, very time consuming, but pretty cool. The labs take a lot of time. The HW is fairly easy. Lectures are out of word documents that you can download from his website. Tests were reasonable - grades were likewise. HW is best done with the notes and the book. However, once I had to use the Motorola manuals (shouldn't have been necessary). Course was a lot of work. Fair difficulty. Neat labs. Valvano really likes this stuff and is knowledgable.

Great professor with lenient but reasonable grading policy. You learn a lot in his lecture. The programming assignments were hard but were a worthwhile learning experience.

Take this man for 319K. If only Lipovski is teaching, wait till the next semester and take Valvano. This class is an easy, easy A. Programs are worth 30%, HW is 20%, 3 tests worth 10% each, final worth 25%, and attendance worth 5%. Whichever of the above averages is the lowest, he will make count 10% less. So if you have a low test grade he will drop it. Or if ure prog avg is low, itll only be worth 20%. Programs usually take 5-10 hours. HW is extremely easy, it comes right out of the book. Our final was a program and was a joke. Written tests are slightly more difficult, but if you look at the homeworks before the test most of the questions are similar to those questions. You must take him!!!

At times, I really wanted to hate this man, but after attending lecture you just can't. He is too amiable. But as far as his class goes, it is good. You learn a lot and grades are not really an issue. One one of the exams, I didn't prepare at all and thought I failed it, but was really surprised to see that I got a 91 on it. The only thing that sucks about his class is the final program where you build a tank that fights other classmates tanks. The only people who win this are people with way too much time on their hands and no lives or girlfriends. The good news though is you can get an F on it, and still easily get an A in the course. I highly recommend Valvano for anything, but keep in mind all the labs can be time consuming so don't overload yourself.

Highly recommend taking EE345L with Valvano if possible. It's a great class with useful labs and you'll learn a lot about microprocessors, namely the MC6812. This stuff is really valuable in getting a job in EE. He tells you exactly whats going to be on the tests, and you get to have a partner for the labs. Pick a smart partner, b/c it will matter who you have. You will learn how to program processors in C, interface to various components. You'll make an alarm clock, calculator, and a complete embedded system on a PC board that you have to design at the begginning of the semester. Awesome class. Learned a lot, and easy A or B.

Took his Operating systems course. Was the best course i ever took in UT, thanks to him. He is one of those fellows who goes by the "cut the crap and tell me what you need" attitude, but really cares a lot about every one of his students. If you dont drop out of his course within the first two weeks, and you endure him for the whole semester, there is no way you can hate him. He is always responsive over email, always answers your questions and is humble enough to say he does not know the answer. And his labs are so brilliant. Makes you wanna learn. Kudos to him, Wish he took more courses.
