Student reviews of Richard Sainsbury
Review from a student who took PHL 610Q
He's by no means the most exciting lecturer, but I think he does a fabulous job. He has a very quirky British sense of humor that pops up randomly and takes you off guard. His lectures generally get dull and plodding after a while, but when the class is interactive and responds well, lots of great discussions follow, because he's fantastic at making each student feel as though their ideas are on par with the great philosophers of our time. The grading was all based on teh T.A. from what I could tell, but I imagine Professor Sainsbury would always choose good T.A.s, as he did with my course. He's just a really practical, kind, interesting man.

Firstly, to my knowledge he actually does no grading. Our TA did basically everything, and he was very inconsistent, as well as criticized any philosophical dissent. Sainsbury himself seemed to have a disconnect in what he desired versus what our TA desired, and either way did not successfully explain nearly any philosophical topic. Truthfully, I disagree with the purpose of philosophy in modern day, so that doesn't help his score, but he was consistently poor as a lecturer and provided little information on interesting topics, or shut down what we wanted to discuss. I would not recommend taking any philosophy course if possible. I don't know whether or not Sainsbury is better or worse than anyone else, but his curriculum is very poorly designed, and he does not teach it well.
