Review from a student who took CS 378
Mooney is a good guy overall. He's willing to answer your questions and explain the concepts if you don't understand the first time around. He may not look at you while talking and seem disinterested, but that's not true. That's just his nature. His projects are mainly making relatively small changes to a large retrieval system that he has written (in Java). They're not too difficult, but I would recommend starting them 3 days ahead of time just to be safe. His lectures can be a little boring sometimes but there are the occasional good lectures and real-life demos. When I took the class, the grade breakdown was: Attendance: 8% Projects: 46% Midterm: 18% Final: 28% Be careful with attendance. Sign in as soon as you get in, because he may not let you if you wait till the end of class to do so.

Mooney is an OK professor, and at UT this puts him ahead of many. This 378 was on data retrieval and the subject matter could be pretty interesting. This class involved very little actual programming. Instead we were given hundreds of pages of data retrieval code (Java) which we had to read and understand and make small changes to. I had never worked with Java before and made it through just fine. The tests were reasonable and he did a lot to prepare you for them. It wasn't difficult to pay attention to Mooney's lectures.. he cracks the occasional joke and generally seems to be a pleasant guy. He didn't seem eager to help when i visited his office hours though. If you need another upper division CS class, this one is a pretty painless way to get it.
