Misra is a badass. He is VERY well known in the CS and you'd be a fool not to take him. Class is interesting and tests arn't as bad as some would make you think.

This has been one of my favorite courses in the CS sequence. There are about 6 medium size programming projects. Each one could take anywhere from 3 to 8 hours to do, which you must turn in with a partner (don't worry, they're fun). The tests are similar to the ones in CS336 or 313K, but you get open books, open notes, and even open laptops! Expect to find a few proofs on each test. A good place to find example tests are on Dr. Misra's website. The lectures were definitely worthwhile; he'll hint at what will be on each test. Be warned, he'll pick on you if you look lost, and he'll notice if you're sleeping in class. I guess my only complaint is that the projects aren't graded very closely; they often just want to know if it works or not, so don't bother with commenting. It is very easy to get a B in this class, and an A only takes a little bit more effort.

I agree, this class is certainly one of the coolest CS classes I've taken to date. The topics actually cover useful material and projects are kinda cool, but the main thing is...it's all VERY useful. For example some of our projects included data compression, data encryption, and implementing finite state machines...things that millions of people everywhere use several times per day (even if they don't know it). Misra has a great style, and just come to class and do your projects and you should do just fine. The discussion sections mainly go over exercises in the book, which will help with proofs when the tests come around. My only complaint was the project grading. The TAs took forever to return grades (I never did find out what my last 2 projects were, not that it mattered once I got my final grade anyway), and they don't really grade the programs in depth at all. On one project I started out with a 20/100 and ended up with a 100/100 after I talked to my TA. He didn't even bother to read my readme.txt file submitted with the project so he didn't run the program correctly. Just be aware all they do is run tests scripts and probably skim the code to make sure it's not someone else's. But overall this class rocks!

I had him in fall2003. His lectures are awesome and he try to make them intresting. He is best professor I ever had. I do not like theory at all but this was the first class in which I really enjoyed theory. All the theory we learned we implmented it. Projects were intresting for example we implement 42 bit encryption etc. Exams are not that bad as long as do the projects and come to class you can make an A easily.

I had Misra this previous fall, and it was probably one of the most influential computer science class I've ever taken. He has a style of teaching that will make you think of the problems and concepts outside of class. The programming assignments aren't bad as long as you get started early. If you're the type to start the assignment the night before, you might have a little trouble getting perfects on the programs. Other than that, they correlate directly with the information he teaches in class. The quizzes aren't bad at all. The biggest problem is the lack of space and time constraint. Other than that, if you glaze over his old practice tests that are online and work the exercises in the course packet the night before, you should do fine.
