you have to know your stuff, but his lectures are great and the book is fantastic. if you do what you have to, you'll come out of this class with a pretty solid understanding of microeconomics. quizzes and tests can be tricky, but you'll get used to it and definitely become more sensitive to the nuances of a lot eco issues. go to the SI sessions, they help a lot. it's not an easy A, but it's doable if you really want to learn the stuff.

Hamer made me love Econ. His lectures are so entertaining, and he really loves what he does. He's so energetic, and fun to be taught by. His class is tough though, and requires a lot of work, but it's worth it. Love the guy, absolutely love him.

Hamermesh is an awesome teacher. You won't necessarily make an A but if you want to think "economically" than this is the class for you. When I went to class I didn't even have to try to stay awake, the man just entertains you. At the end of the course he rapped to us and rode around on a scooter.

Yes, Hamermesh is very funny and his class was entertaining, especially with the end Eco Rap. Very amusing...heck, it better be because you won't be so amused when you see his final exam. It's the toughest test I've ever seen in my life for a social science. I hate social sciences now because of his class. It doesn't matter how much you study, you either know it or you don't. It's really about investing a lot, A LOT of your time in this class and if you're a science major like me, please, find something else. He is very arrogant and very hard to approach. It's not the end of the world if you ultimately decide to take him. He is one of the better ECO professors at UT from what I heard but had I know what I know now, I would have avoided this class like plague.

He definitely has a passion for economics, which is apparent in his lectures. I would recommend this class as long as you don't mind huge classes.

This would have to be the best ECO professor! His lectures are very hands-on and you can get involved almost everyday. He gives so many opportunities to make an A and all his exams are exactly like the practice ones in the study guide. Oh and he suggests that you buy his little book of Eco concepts but you don't need it, I never even opened it. Try your hardest to get in Hamermesh's class... it's well worth it!

So, here's the deal. I got a B in the course. Let's review though, He has 4 grades, and he drops 1. Quiz totals: 20% Midterm 1: 20% Midterm 2: 20% Final: 40% I was doing really bad on the quizzes, besides my heavy schedule, so I stopped taking them, knowing he would drop those. I got a B on his first midterm, an A- on his 2nd midterm and an A- on his final. If you drop 20%, then the reasonable way to redistribute the grades would be Midterm 1: 25%, midterm 2: 25% and final being worth 50%. Well, he gave me a B. 14% of the class got As on the second midterm and 10% of the class got an A on the final(including me). He's a nice person, but I have to say, this is by far the most unfair grading I've seen. I got As on what is 75% of the course, and I even asked if I could take another comprehensive final now, just to prove to him that I know enough to get an A, and he refused. As you can see from above, if we average the grades I GAVE HIM, they should average to a 2, but no. I'm giving him a 1. DO NOT TAKE HAMERMESH FOR ANYTHING. Having a nice professor is a good thing, but niceness only makes you feel good for the moment, he is screwing up GPAs of people who really need it to survive.

He's an awesome professor. Go by his office hours, he's so friendly, its amazing. His lectures are very funny(albeit sometimes lame). The only problem comes during his multiple choice questions on quizzes and exams. They are very difficult, and honestly you should think of these as 50% testing your knowledge of economics, 20% your opinion(as long as it agrees with his), and 30% intelligence. Oh and always recheck your grade, his graders made so many mistakes this semester.

if your an econ major, take this class cause hes a good professor and youll learn your stuff cause its a hard class. if your looking to get credit for humanities for say engineering, look elsewhere. lectures are intresting and he's really active so he'll keep you from falling asleep. quizzes are once a week and the questions are very tricky. no homework. test are very hard. first is all free response, 2nd is half free response / half multi choice. the questions are tough although my study amount was minimal but the multi choice questions are very very tricky.

i love the hamer... he is soo funny and makes learning about economics fun. but the course itself is difficult so be prepared to do the readings bc if you dont do it you will be lost. he is very knowledgable in this area of course...so his tests and quizes are quite difficult.

OVER RATED. Sure, Hamermesh is a great lecturer, but it gets old after awhile. The pros about his class is that he is very organized, animated, and straight forward on his lectures. The cons are that this class is extremely hard to make an A in and you put in much more work than your grade will show for. If you want to learn microeconomics, then sure, take Hamermesh. But if you're looking for an easy A, forget it.

Dr. Hammermesh was by far the most interesting teacher that I've had at UT to date. All of the lectures are lively and he adds excitement to Economics (wow, I know). He calls himself "The Hammer" and he is an absolute shock the first day because he runs and jumps around. The class consists of 8 quizzes (which he drops two), 2 midterms, and the final. The quizzes average together and the final counts twice as much as the midterms or quiz average. He drops the lowest of the 5 overall grades. The class was difficult and I probably could have studied a lot more. I bearly studied at all for the final, so I ended up with a B in the class. If you have the opportunity to take "The Hammer", then I suggest you do! He is absolutely awesome!

He's interesting on and off. In the beginning, he's lectures are quite hilarious, but towards the middle and end he tends to be quite boring. His quizzes, midterms, and final are quite hard. You will need to put A LOT of time and effort into his class in order to make an A or B.

The Hamer is an awesome guy. He makes this horribly boring subject fun. If he wasn't so interesting, I would definately be falling asleep in this class because the material is horrible. His tests are hard. He asks tricky questions that are meant to make you think real hard, but in actuality, just confuse you. If you can devote a lot of time to studying before tests, you should be ok. At least he makes it fun! Two thumbs up.

ok ya he jumps around and says stupid things. but truly guys hamermesh is not a great teacher. if all you want to do is draw graphs and not learn a thing from them, then take this class. he is an arrogant and pompous teacher who could care less about his students. his tests and quizzes are tricky as ever and he doesnt want you to do well. he's more worried about his research or catching his next plane to some far off destination. take a different teacher, for your own sake

i wish his TAs were teaching instead of him. His Undergraduate TAs seem to clarify this difficult course much more than he is. So here it is. If you're looking for a fun professor who likes to give interesting examples but inside is the devil, take it. His tests are killer hard and make you feel as if all the preparation you did was for nothing. do NOT take him. if you end up taking him, DO NOT BUY HIS BOOK. IT IS A WASTE OF 18 DOLLARS. THIS IS THE TRUTH

This is a tough class, but do the readings, pay attention during lecture, and go to office hours if you need help! The quizzes and midterms are tricky but he drops the 2 lowest quiz grades and curves the exams even though you may not end up with an A even if you do particularly well in the class. He is very entertaining and enthusiastic about economics. Read the textbook and his own book to get a better understanding.
