His courses all require a lot of reading - and he expects you to be interested and genuinely want to learn about the material. So he is tough - but he is also one of the best professors I have ever had at UT. I actually learned more about economics in his classes than I have in any of my other eco classes, was interested in lectures ... and even though he required a lot of reading I liked it. It is hard to make an A - but you will not learn more in any other eco class. I would totally recommend taking him.

Those of you who dont like to read would be better advised to stay away from this class. All the notes are online, but there is no way you can read em all. I worked very hard and ended up with a B. You will have to read read read so if that doesnt sound like you dont take his class. Cleaver himself is an interesting character. His lectures are interesting and he's not afraid to bring out his skepticism of contemporary teaching styles or neo classical economics.

I forgot the exact title. The course was Marxist Economics. His lectures are definitely entertaining. He goes off on tangents all the time. Definitely a troublemaker in UT's Economics dept, but that's not entirely relevant to the course, except when he makes references to it. He's average when rating professors for friendliness and such. I could approach him in office hours, but he's very defensive in explaining grading. The TA does the grading and they all assume the students are lazy and well, chances are you'll end up with a B with Cleaver. It just seems to take a lot of luck to get that A.

Cleaver is definitely the best professor I've ever had. No one has a more interesting lecture. He's also hilarious. He does ask you to read a lot, though. He posts most material on the web so you don't have to go buy all of the books. The tests are all essay but there are only three of them and no final. The only problem might be keeping up with the reading.
