Great Professor! His lectures are funny, entertaining, and informative. His exams are relatively easy (i.e. a couple hours of cramming in the morning before the exams got me an 86 on the midterm and a 94 on the final). I highly recommend this or any other class with Dr. Barany.

Absolute nightmare. Dude is rude and careless. He makes us watch hour long documentaries a few times a week just so he doesn't have to show up and can claim he was still "teaching". I learned nothing in this class, even though I worked my ass off. He doesn't care about teaching and bragged about this multiple times. Only around the top ten % of students get an A, which is ridiculous for freakin government. Avoid him and his classes at all costs!

Very good professor. He is extremely funny,and really knowledgable, especially since he had first hand experience of Eastern Europe (he is Hungarian). His tests are very easy (all scantron), and he gives you the option of an optional research paper. Low maintenance class, but I still feel like I learned a lot. Would take him again.

If your GPA matters to you, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. I was 3.8 gpa student and Prf. Barany was ready to fail me. He gives a fairly high amount of reading, but what really killed my was his pop quizzes that you had a few times a week. He'd assign you a substantial amount of reading then pick one question from the entire reading, something really minute. I have to admit he's a funny lecturer and knows everything about E. Europe, but if you want help during office hours, especially something concerning your grade, seek another professor. Even when he was asked questions about the lecture, he seemed fairly disinterested. He has a horrible disposition and is quite rude. He also gives way too much info in lecture over things that you'll never be tested on.

Ok this was a long time ago, but I took GOV 365N - GOV and POL of Eastern Europe from Barany in the Spring of 1995. Now it's 2012 and he's one of the few professors from UT that I remember, and that was an excellent course. He lectures from experience and a great deal of knowledge, and will teach you things not in the textbooks. If you really want to learn, Barany is a great professor. You have to actually attend class and listen to the lectures and participate to get something out of it. Don't expect to just read the texts and show up for tests.
