Student reviews of Philip Varghese
Review from a student who took ASE 376
Varghese is tough but will teach you a lot about Propulsion. By the end of the course you will understand how ramjets, turbofans, turbojets, and rockets work. Varghese teaches class by writing on the chalkboard and running through the theory of the various systems listed above. He also runs through example problems and makes comments on the theory which are usually on the tests. Varghese's tests are difficult and require you to completely understand the homework. If you copy the homework and don't study you are in serious trouble. His tests will push your understanding from all angles and hit you hard if you forget a concept or how to do a problem. Varghese is also an extremely tough grader. If you forget a concept or fail to do a problem wrong he will deduct a lot of points and usually write a sentence admonishing you for forgetting. He makes his own grading system grading by accuracy, precision, and units of your answer. In my class the majority of students made 60s on his first exam and he responded by reporting all of them to Engineering Student Affairs. A kick in the ass to motivate them to do better. Varghese is probably one of the toughest professors you will have but if you work really really hard you will walk away with a better knowledge and an understanding of how propulsion on any system works.
