Review from a student who took RTF 305
I started out the year very eager about this class, but soon came to the realization that this was going to be my least favorite class. The lectures are horrible considering he simply reads directly from his powerpoint presentations, and since it's at 9:00 in the morning, it's really hard to stay awake. The tests are pretty easy if you study for them, but I wouldn't recommend this class unless it's a prereq or you're an RTF major.

RTF 305 is, by far, the most disappointing course I?ve taken at UT. The lectures are boring for the most part and starting at 9 in the morning, it?s hard to get motivated to get out of bed. What makes the situation worse is that attendance is taken on a sporadic basis, so no one really knows if they?ll be counted off for missing a lecture. Discussion sessions are mandatory, and there?s a quiz every week. I?d say a third of the TA?s don?t speak English, which makes discussion frustrating. I?m not sure if this is a reflection of Professor Straubhaar?s teaching skills, but the class definitely was not worthwhile to take unless you have to for an RTF degree. Don?t take it unless you have to or you enjoy being crammed into an auditorium with 500 people at 9 in the morning.

I had Straubaar (sp?) for RTF 305 in the fall. He is really boring. But you only have Friday classes when you have a test. His tests are really easy: multiple choice. But there's a lot of information it covers. Don't really bother to do the reading. Just flip to the end of the chapters and answer the study questions, go over the review, and skim the power points he puts on BB. (You can sleep through this class.) The screenings are long and horrible. As long as you understand the main idea, you can sleep through the rest of the movie and still answer all of the film questions on the test. The TA sessions are a waste of time and you have to turn in busy work once a week. I think attendance counts for 30% of the grade? He takes random attendance for screenings and class. It's really disappointing that this ONE class makes some people rethink their major because I'm taking RTF 314 with Ramirez-Berg and it's my favorite class. Overall, the class was time consuming. I made a 97 in there and I'm pretty dumb.

Unless you love doing grunt work I wouldn't reccomend this class. You are basically stuck doing research for the profs next book and the TA's thesis paper. Its the most unorganized and poorly put together class i've ever been in. You know how ever semester you get one class that just makes the weeks drag by, yeh, well, this would be that class.

This class helped me see that RTF isn't what I should be studying at UT. The lectures are horrible boring (and are seldom useful for preparing for the test, though there are normally a few lecture-based questions on the tests). There's three tests, you only need to take two of them and they are pretty easy. My TA's native language wasn't English, and, unfortunately, it limited communication ande made the discussion sections really boring. The class is pretty easy, for the most part, just really boring and tedious.

Ok, RTF 305 sucked the big one, but Straubhaar's other classes are great. He is hilarious. I took Brazilian Media Studies and it was great, very laid-back. You want to go to class just to hear this guy laugh. Highly recommend him in any class other than 305.
