Dr. Schmidt is a very good lecturer for me 343. You will however, work very very hard on the projects. His tests are very difficult too. The only good thing is that even though you may not do so good, everyone else has the same problem.

Cares about students, explains concepts well and provides good examples you can tell that he enjoys what he does

Excellent professor, though he tends to go a few minutes past lecture time, but it's worth it because you get a lot better understanding of the material than studing it on your own. Lets you write anything, including homework in textbook, and all exams are open book.

Dr. Schmidt has by far been the best professor I've had at UT. I truly feel privileged to have taken thermodynamics with such a great teacher. His lectures are really great, he knows how to really make you understand the concepts behind thermo. Not only are his lectures good, but also entertaining. On one of his lectures, he dressed up in a nice tux and top hat, and assumed the character of a famous, dead engineer and taught the class for the day. Near the end of the course when he was going through cycle analysis, he would tell us stories of his thermodynamic "heroes" and give the stories of these people who really contributed to engineering. He goes over practical applications of the things you are learning, and it really makes me proud to have chosen ME as my major. His great lecturing aside, Dr. Schmidt really cares about his students. You can go in and ask him questions and ask for help, and he will really sit down and help you to understand the material. Although the homework can be tough, it's not overwhelming. Also, he posts the solutions online after each due date which really helps as study material for the exams. The exams are also pretty straight forward and fair. Grading is also quite fair. As he says, as long as you get the concepts, then if you make one small numerical error then you will still get 90% of the points. Dr. Schmidt is a really down to earth guy and just a great proff. I really hope that I get to take him for future courses at UT. It was my honor to have been in his class.

If you like Thermodynamics and MATLAB you'll love Thermal Fluids. As long as you do a great job on the final project report you will do fine in the class. If your group members don't pull their weight- talk to him about it! The project is much more important than your test averages. When first writing the code its best for all group members to do it together- don't divide and conquer until you've got the problem mostly solved. To do well on the tests you should attend all lectures and write down stuff he talks about that is not in the book.

Dr. Schmidt is by far one of the best professors in ME --probably one of the best professors in the entire college as well. The tests are generally straight forward, but you have to get the correct numbers to receive most of the credit, depending on which TA grades the problem. If you're teammates are not pulling their share of the work, he will adjust their grades accordingly.
