I very much enjoyed this class; her lectures expanded from the basic knowledge level into the analysis and interpretive levels. She taught history in such a way that it really sticks with her students long after the test is over.

This review is from a summer first session course i took with Restad. In the summer, there is about one chapter from the text book a night (prob takes around half an hour). Her lectures are really boring and she seems to ramble quite a bit, but if you read the text book you should be fine. Her tests are pretty easy. She gives one midterm and one final, both of which consists of 3 paragraph length 'explain the history term' where you describe 3 of 5 events/people/laws etc. The essay is a choice of 2. She also assigned a stupid extra novel, "Ragged Dick" which reads like it was written for a 2nd grader, but she only made one of the two final essay choices related to it, so if you don't read it it wont hurt you, but you wont have much choice when which essay you pick. This course is great for people who just want credit. Grade wise its all up to the TA, which isnt your choice, but thats how any history class is.

This prof. is not the best at lecturing. She's a bit boring, and doesn't tell you enough about history to really get what's going on without already knowing a good amount. This makes the readings pretty important and lectures pretty unneccesary.

I just did not like Prof. Restad. She assigns so much reading, most of which I never completed. The textbook could not be any more boring, the historical documents are too subjective, and the fictional novels just seem trivial. Her lectures aren't very informative (or factual sometimes) either. The only thing I can suggest is to go to every discussion section and participate consistently. Showing up gives you a full letter grade I believe. I managed an A only because of what I remembered from high school and because I could sometimes elaborate on what the TA discussed. I would not recommend her class if I had an alternative.
