Great Professor! I made an A! IT is possible if you know how to study. The test questions are very similar to those of CMS 306. They are application questions. If you really study hard you can make an "A." The tests are not as hard as you think. I didn't even read the book I just studied the SI sheets and went over lectures. You should know the lecturers really well. Reading your notes is not enough you have to actually know the material, I reccomend note cards.

Daly is great, but really not all that great. I think some students really just worship the ground that he walks on. He is an entertaining lecturer because of the material that he has to work with. (I'm sure he wouldn't be so fun if he were teaching Calculus). I made an A in the end, so I am not some bitter student, but I really wasn't all that impressed by him. I expected more I guess. It is a really hard class though, be ready to study a LOT if you want an A.

AWESOME PROF...take this just becuase the lectures are so interesting. The tests are really hard, but you get a chance to retake every test for full credit.

I'm going to have to disagree with most of the stuff people are saying here. I will agree that Prof. Daly is a great guy, but the class sucks. Maybe it's because I had already taken several upper division CMS classes, but I thought that CMS 315M was pretty much a time-waster for me. I suppose it's probably more interesting for those that haven't taken other CMS classes or for freshman that think it's cool that college professors will talk about sex. It's a weed out class for CMS hopefuls and it shows with the nit-pickyness on the tests. If you're not a communications major, I would recommend taking it pass/fail because it's not worth the worry. That said, Daly makes the most out of the class. He's a great prof, I don't mean to say anything otherwise, but the material left a bit to be desired.

I DON'T AGREE. while i do really enjoy daly as a professor, this class is more like a weekly glorified motivational speech. any class that prompts questions like, "so, if i like a guy emotionally, can i also like him PHYSICALLY?" seems a little off to me. i don't like being told that, for instance, "these are the 3 different ways you can love someone" or "charisma is subjective, but it consists of these five qualities." i may be the only one who feels like this, but i honestly think that this class is not worth the loss in grade points because of difficult and esoteric test questions.

I agree that Daly is a very talented professor and his lectures are fun and entertaining, but you will cover a lot of material. The tests aren't much fun, but you get a second chance, and there are chances for extra credit that are pretty painless. The paper is EASY!!! Advice: Make the TA's your new best friend, they are very helpful, and go to SI if at all possible, Jaime is a life saver!!!

IMHO, class is a waste of time. Lecture's are entertaining and engaging, but that's it. Tests are tricky as hell, and I did worse on my retest. Take it pass/fail.

Daly is an incredible professor. I recommend everyone take this or any of his classes if they can. One thing worth noting: hundreds of people attempt to get into his CMS 315 course every semester. What you should do is send an email to him ([email protected]), a semester in advance, requesting the opportunity to get into his class. He'll put you on a guaranteed waiting list for the next semester. Homework involves reading, going over notes from lectures and one short (two-three page) paper. If you can stand all this, course workload won't be high. He gives a second chance for each test (one midterm, one endterm). They take a little getting used to, but I was accustomed after the first chance on my first test (don't expect to do exceedingly well, but you'll see a vast improvement on your second chance).

ADVICE: awesome prof...class is definately worthwhile BUT you have to go to class...and WRITE DOWN THE EXAMPLES HE GIVES. he uses powerpoint slides...write what's on those too...but he gives you real life examples for just about every concept and, to get an A...or even B, you've gotta write them down. TAKE THIS CLASS...AWESOME! you'll get alot out of it.

Dr. Daly is the most overrated professor at UT. I guess some people think he's edgy? He's charismatic, and the classes are vaguely entertaining, but not as entertaining as the continuous laughter surrounding me would have suggested. Example: "What's a stereotype for black people?" Someone yells, "Ghetto!" Uproarious laughter ensues. There is no room for discussion, though he'll let the class go on for 15 minutes or more providing predictable examples to prompts such as these. People, it seems, are easily entertained, especially by college professors who, as someone else mentioned, talks about sex and other "off-limits" topics (that is SO college!). Grades are based on a couple of tests which are often tricky and ambiguously structured. I guess the focus of them was applying concepts, but something straightforward was always lost in these "real-life" questions (real life's situations don't have simple objective answers!) Anyway, if you're one of those people that sort of wants to shoot themselves when other people talk in your classes (you know what I mean), don't take this class. It's for everyone else.

great guy, great class. kind of tough, but not too hard to get a B. lectures are hilarious and almost everyone (500 students)goes to every lecture.

Daly is great at lecturing...the test are KILLERS though. The class is very entertaining...he loves to use sex for examples. He also uses students a lot for examples (asking them questions about their life). Also, if you like psychology or sociology, this class is similar, but not directly related. I seriously recommend taking this class as pass/fail. It's not worth your GPA lowering...but the class is definitely worth taking. He also gives you plenty of chances to make your raise your grade in the class. He's a nice man. In addition, the class will help you in your future with your career or your love relationships (he gives great tips and ways to go about handling situations). This is my favorite class at UT. Take it pass/fail!! =)

Daly is a great lecturer. I highly recommend this class. His lectures are very organized and if you miss a lecture he records them all so you can go on-line and listen to it word for word. But....he is so good that you will not want to miss class anyway. His lectures are hilarious and you learn a lot about relationships. If you have a good study habits than you can make an "A" on the tests. If you study the lectures and go to the SI sessions you will do good, trust me. YOu have to put in the time to study though. Another great thing is that you get to take a re-test for every test. You get the highest of the two grades. ITs win win.

Here's the truth: It's a hard class. But think about this: People know it's hard and STILL take the class. Personally I feel like a lot of the stuff is a load of junk and that it is all stuff we already know, only now there are six different names for "why we love people." its a good class, but i'd advise pass/failing it, because it is a stressful class. SI is important, and the TAs are smart. They know what theyre doing.
