Review from a student who took CS 336
Not a good lecturer. Not helpful during office hours...just stares at you. Curves are ok, but no notes allowed on tests. Only two tests: the 25% midterm is right after Spring Break, and the final counts 50%. Homework is also tough. No doubt though, he's smart and knows a lot about the subject, but he's not a good teacher for undergrads.

Agreed. Boyer is the man. Take him for anything and everything.

what a shitty teacher. don't take him unless you're prepared to perform first-aid for a heartattack.

Don't let the other 2 reviews and grade histories get you down about Boyer. He is a great lecturer and a funny guy. If you like the theory side of CS, Boyer is the man to take. He gives 6 homework assignments, a midterm, and a final. The homeworks are a bit of work and the grading was pretty fair on them. The tests are much easier in comparison to the homeworks. He curves the class average up to an 80, which is pretty damn generous. He counts homework for 25% of your final grade, midterm 25%, and the final 50%. The final was just as easy as the midterm and I came out with a solid A. The first homework assignment is meant to scare you off and make you drop. DON'T FALL FOR IT. You will get some bad grades on homework, but then again so will everyone else. The curve helps everyone. Great guy, good material that helps so much later on.

Boyer is an interesting professor to say the least. Yes, he's psychotic and frightening at times, but he's also a big geneous in the CS field. I took PHY 313k and CS 336 with him and he sometimes makes you feel like the dumbest person on earth, but after you learn it, you see where he's coming from. The hardest thing about these class is getting up early enough to make the 8AM session. You should also go to lecture (for any class really) 'cause Teaching yourself from the book is never a good idea. Boyer always shifts his assignment averages to 80, so say the class average on a midterm is 50%, he'll shift all grades up 30% points; very fair. I'd recommend boyer if you can attend 75% of the classes; you'll make an A. he tells you not to skip, but skipping an 8AM is inevitable once in a while.
