Ok he's a great prof just 2 warnings 1. Be ready to wake up early all of his classes are really early. And if you don't go to class, you will be so lost it's not even funny. 2. He doesn't give the test grades back, makes the class extremely stressful especially if your life depends on getting an A.

Dr. Guy's lectures are quite good, and he's a VERY entertaining professor. My only objection to his classes is the complete lack of feedback. You never get exams back (I seriously doubt he even grades them, since I missed one and still got a B without doing half the homework). So the grade must be based on the homework, and since he concocts random problems that you have to get in class and can't look up elsewhere, you actually have to go to the inevitably early class just for the homework (I learned the hard way). If you can get up regularly in the morning and don't mind a lack of feedback, I can't think of a better professor for you. But if you want a later class or a more organized course, look elsewhere.

Supposedly, Dr. Guy is an excellent professor with top-notch examples. But attendance was never required so I don't actually know. He has three midterms and one final which he gives an outline for a week in advance. No calculators or 'computers'. But his tests are basically these outlines changed into question format. He seemingly makes up homework assignments at the end of each class and it's up to the TA when they are collected. Not until the end of the year did he mention where his office was and when he held office hours. He did make mention of it several times during the year but never gave any concrete details. If you want help, go see the TA. At the end of the year, he proposed a grading scheme where your three midterms consisted of 65%, a final worth 25%, and a 10% hw grade. He claims to replace your lowest test grade with your final if you score higher. I honestly don't believe any of that because I didn't finish a single exam (a bit lengthy) but had a high homework average and ended up with an A. Overall, I think he's a good professor but the class can get difficult if you don't put forth effort to understand the material and do the homework.

He is the best teacher for those who have a passion for math and want an in depth knowledge of the subject. Those who just want to sit in the class and get good grade shouldnt waste his time as well as Dr. Guy's. He is such an experienced teacher as well as helpful person, i will rate him(as the other reviewer did) as the best math teacher in UT i have seen.

Dr. Guy is THE best teacher in math at UT. SOME (NOT ALL) students complain, "You don't get any test back or homework", so what it's not like theY passed the exams to begin with! It's in their best interest to not see how poorly they did. I've learned so much in his classes and received alot of help from Dr. Guy that when it comes to taking a class with him or someone else I don't even think twice. If you want someone to really teach you the material and cares so much about YOU that he holds around 8-10 hours of office hours a week to help everyone and won't leave till everyone is finished asking their questions then take Dr. Guy. If you are expecting something for free and don't want to be a good student and study then don't waste his time!

Well, they've said it all. Add one more thing, he is one of the most prestigious prof in math department, already a legend. So if you are interested in graduate school, take his class and work diligently to attain an A, then you'll be rewarded a valuable recommendation letter.

words alone cannot describe this awesome guy. true he doesnt give back tests, but it's what you learn in the class that counts, and really, i'd rather not see those failing grades anyways. he's a very generous grader and a very understanding teacher. his test dates are set to accomodate the students' schedules. i loved this guy so much that i even nominated him for ut's teaching award, which he received. i'm sure i wasn't the only one who nominated him, but it was great seeing him get awarded during the middle of class (free cookies too!) anyway, there's no other ut prof that i've met that i admire more than him.

If you take notes, go to TA sessions, and do the homework its just like any other class. Study for the tests and go to class and you shouldn't have a problem making a B.

As other reviews have said, this prof never gives tests back (rumor has it he doesn't ever look at them). Do not expect to ever know your grade in the class until after the semester is over. His lectures are slow and tedious, and he didn't even hand out a syllabus at the beginning of the semester, nor did he tell us where his office is.
