This professor is horrible. Nothing taken from his "lectures" can help anyone in the course of their life, let alone their college career, especially if he/she is hoping to one day become an ADV student. Such important lessons as "Advertising can be fun" and "Advertising is neat" are what can be learned from lecture. The tests are hard as fuck for an intro class for non-majors, and this class should therefore not be taken by anyone. Thank you Wilcox for your 3 hour piece of shit waste of time (which didn't even count as a general credit for me, despite what is clearly stated on the course syllabis). Fuck you sir...yes indeed, fuck you.

I think that how well you do in this class depends on the work that you do in it. He uses a 1000 pt scale: 4 tests of 175 points each, 3 projects of 75 pts each, attendance at the ta sessions 75 pts. On average, the class scored about 130 on each of the exams. Also, there was a "curve" for a couple of the ta's classes b/c some graded alot harder than others. I had Mason and he was the one in the middle. The chick was the worst and the surfer guy was by far the easiest. Pretty much everyone would make an A on the projects in his classes contrary to the chick's classes which would grade most projects no higher than a B unless it was exceptional. Advice on tests: Read the book and know definitions... and charts... and specific ads mentioned in class. Also, at the end of the semester there's a "career day" where a few reps from the diff adv programs come to speak... DO NOT skip this. The last test covers random comments specifically questioned and if you didnt go, you won't have a clue. Hope this helped.

Wilcox is definatly not as bad as this one person seems to think. All you have to do is study the reviews and you have an easy A. His lectures can get a little boring but they are also pretty funny. Obviously someone who doesn't put the time and effort into studying isn't going to do well in the course.

For ADV 318J, all you had was four tests and an optional final which would replace your lowest test. His lectures are kind of dragging, but the ads he uses in class are actually quite entertaining. He actually posts the notes on Blackboard, however they might sometimes be very brief, and even though the TA's say that you should always go to lectures, it maybe isn't quite necessary, however his tests (nd questons from his lecture do get quite tricky mainly because of something you missed in class that he said - so be careful and listen to those things he might say that aren't on the powerpoint slides he uses). Also his tests are easy, 40 multiple chooice/tru-false, with 20 directly from the book and 20 from his lectures. There are also 3 projects you have to do, they're actually easy if you spend time on them, the last one actually requires you to make an ad, in fact it took me a whole night before it needed to be turned in and I always did good, however, I wouldn't always recommend that. There isn't any homework except those three projects. I would suggest you try to go to lecture even though they might be kind of boring sometimes, because some are also fun. There are times where he plays some videos the whole class, and maybe if anything two to three questions on that show up on the test, on those things he does get specific (maybe which person mentioned or did this, etc). He's a good professor overall and the book is actually very good in my opinion.

I absolutely loved this class and thought Wilcox did a great job in making it interesting. He uses ads for examples that are fun. There are some videos you watch occassionally that suck because they're at least 20 yrs old. The tests were pretty easy...only 40 m/c. The only thing is 20 of those are from the book so you do actually have to read the material, but the books not that hard of a read especially with most of the pictures of ads taking up alot of the pages. There are also some projects to do but I usually did them the night before and still got good grades. All in all I would definitly recommend this class for anyone.

Awful! What a waste of time and a thousand dollars. Take Dudo and have somebody that actually cares how you do and doesn’t curve the grades to save his ass.
