I'm convinced he could make anyone want to be an art history major. I found him to be a wealth of knowledge - his interests are vast and he incorporates them into his teaching. Never boring. He's extremely easy to talk to and is more than willing to help his students.

Prof. Waldman was the best teacher I had in 4 years of college! He is funny, energetic and interesting. He makes 1 1/2 seem like 20 minutes. You feel bad for missing his class because he is so fun. He is also very approachable and is great help on papers. He is not intimidating and makes you feel smart. He by far is the most fun I have had at UT! Everyone should take him for any of his Renaissance Art classes no matter what your major... you will have a blast!

It's clear that he truly wants students to be interested in the subject and to be able to appreciate art. There are weekly reading assignments that are pretty light, and (of course) it helps a bunch to read before lecture. Grading is based on lecture AND discussion attendance, 3 tests, and two papers. Tests are painting identification and discussion, fill-in-the blank vocabulary, and essay. You MUST attend lecture, not only because he takes attendance, but because he will also bring things up in lecture that are not in the readings. Take good notes. Also, he likes students to participate in class. Although I probably have a minority opinion, sometimes I found him a little patronizing; I didn't like how he so blatantly incorporated his personal interpretation of history or opinions on current events into the lectures. While this didn't happen often, I felt that it happened enough to undermine the educational value of the lectures and were a bit disruptive, in that they caused him to go off onto excessively long (20 min) tangents instead of actually teaching us. Overall, I thought he was an all right teacher; the difficulty of the class is just right and the subject matter was pretty interesting. You will have to put a little effort in. Don't totally blow it off, and you might find that you actually enjoy some of it.
