I absolutely loved Rusty. While it is true that he can go a little off topic every once in awhile in class, this man is a fountain of knowledge. He's been in the business a long time; you can learn a lot from him. Besides that, he really cares about his students. Each semester, he makes it a point to meet with each of his students to see if they are on the right career path and if there is any way he can help them. Overall, he is one of the best professors in the J school.

Rusty is hilarious. That in itself does not make a professor good or bad, but it does make lectures a bit more enjoyable. He seems to know everything about everything, and often launches into hilarious rails against the government, against the Texan and/or Austin Student, and very often against other sections of the J school, especially during the production of the Texas Journalist. Still, he cares about the craft of journalism, and cares about his students (at least the ones who he sees are making an effort).

Rusty is one of the best professors in the J school. He doesn't take himself too seriously and really wants to help students get jobs and internships. There are two really easy tests and the rest of the grade is lab work, which is also not too challenging, unless you've never read a newspaper. He likes to let class out early and give days off if he's running ahead of schedule. There's no attendance, but you won't want to miss the class.

Sure there's no attendance. Sure, he can make you laugh. Sure, he may help you get internships and sure, he may let class out early. wonderful. there are dozens of professors that do all of the above and have the ability to remain professional in front of their students. there's no attendance because he's a lazy man who only likes to help himself. he makes you laugh at the expense of other students in the class. he may help you get internships if you suck up and go to his office "just to chat" everyday. he lets class out early?! he doesn't even teach. we spent half our classes this semester critiquing the daily texan. i would rather have actually learned how to edit than do that. i dont need to spend a whole day learning how to become a copy editor. labs suck. but there's no way around this guy. so here are some tips: -go to class if youre not doing anything else. it doesn't help/hurt your grade. -go to lab even if youre foot falls off -pray that youre the one he likes. he likes the "popular kids" (he liked me so i dont know if that statement holds true), the kids that are from other countries and are here trying to get their masters and anyone who constantly reminds him that he "founded" the dow jones news wire. class BLOWS. enjoy!
