Dr. Silverthorn is a satisfactory lecturer. Most of this class and your grades for this class is determined by your lab section TA. I lucked out because I had a great one this semester. The class isn't as challenging as I originally thought it would be. It goes like this: during lecture dr. silverthorn will introduce a concept and give a little background lecture and usually a list of supplies available in the lab. next you write a protocol for an experiment you designed to test any aspect of the concept introduced in lecture. You will do this three times throughout the semester. Also throughout the semester there will be various written assignments on the experiments (ie. the abstract one week, the materials & methods of another experiment another week,etc.) I would recommend this class to anyone who would like practice writing scientific papers or needs a pretty easy lab class. If you're looking to expand your knowledge of physiology, however, you should look elsewhere.

This is perhaps the hardest biology class in UT. Honestly i think she is somewhat overrated, but it could be because i never get used to way she lectures (mostly partner/group discussion and CPS). You MUST do the readings before going to class otherwise you'll be completely lost. A lot of the topics on exam are not covered or even mentioned during lectures, and her exams consist a lot of qualitative thinking. This class has 3 exams and a final (if you've a B or above you don't have to take it), in addition, there're CPS quizes nearly every week. If you want to take this class for MCAT, i advise you not to because it won't help you too much and work load is excessive. If you're already accepted to medical school then this might be the class that you want to take.

And on the 8th day, Dee Silverthorn informed God that she was, in fact, the supreme being in the universe. Nowhere is Silverthorn's rampant narcissism more apparent than in the fact that she makes students seeking a letter of recommendation fill out a lengthy application. Her lecture style is not worth much comment, and she is certainly not the divine gift that she would like everyone to think that she is. Her tests, however, are where her pettiness shines through, as she tests not broad concepts, but rather trivial incidentals, answer formatting, and adherence to a particular learning style. These examinations on semantics serve primarily to bolster Silverthorn's opinion of herself, because she apparently cannot come to terms with the idea that a working knowledge of physiology is something accessible to all. Only Dee Silverthorn can be good at physiology, and she can prove it because she is the one who does the grading.

Her assistants lost my assignment but refuse to acknowledge it,yet they blamed me and question my integrity and honesty. Yet my grades,test and homework scores,and attendance say otherwise. While we are bickering via e-mail for a few weeks I get the grade back for another HW assignment and it is passing, but barely which is a dramatic difference to what I had been getting. I was suppose to make an A based on my grades and HER formula and percentages,however she gave me a B+. When I asked her about it she refused to show me why I didn't get an A and that I was very lucky to get what I got. I tried setting up a time to see her in her office,but she refused to see me and even went as so far as insulting me by saying I was trying g to get what I didn't earn. All I asked was her to break it down and show me how it came to a B+. Her arrogance knows no bounds. Her main argument was, "she had been teaching for years and she scored based on how well she felt people mastered the material".So you put a grading system lined out in the syllabus as every other instructor at all grade levels,but yet you choose to ignore it when it doesn't suit you? In closing I never took another class from her. Her book is overpriced garbage that has no resale or intellectual value. She sounds like a pretentious South Caroilina hick who cares for nothing but her ego. Thanks for putting a stain amongst my numerous A's.
