Review from a student who took ART 381C
This was one of the most worthless courses I've ever taken. For three weeks- THREE WEEKS- all we did was do Lynda.com tutorials as a class. No, we were not working on a project- we were going through tutorials where we had to do Lynda.com exercises. FOR THREE WEEKS. Bogdan goes off on existential rambles, where he mostly speaks in mixed metaphors and has nothing of substance to say. Don't bother asking him a direct question about anything technical unless you have 20-30 minutes on your hands. He would explain a concept for our next project for a whole class period, and in the end not ONE student truly understood what the heck he was talking about. The TA had to teach us technical things, because Bogdan was too busy staring into his navel, I guess, to actually help a student. The critique days seemed ok at first- though Bogdan still would get distracted and go off on rambles where no one understood what he was talking about. The final critique was a complete s*** show. We only had 3 hours to watch and critique 13 or 14 (not sure) students works. The vids were anywhere from 5-7minutes long, leaving only about 5 minutes for critique. Knowing this, Bogdan decided to ramble and let critique go on for 23 minutes. A student offered to set up a timer for the rest of the vids so that everyone could get the same amount of time to be critiqued. The TA snipped at her 'WE HAVE THIS CLASSROOM UNDER CONTROL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!' No. No they didn't. They kept letting critiques go long for the next few vids- and closer to the end of class others were getting 1-2 minute critiques- NO ONE got to speak about their work- and then 4 people didn't even get to have a critique AT ALL. A couple of students didn't get to show their entire vids. Some of the best produced work was disdained, while poor image work where everything looked like it was shot inside of a paper bag and was heavily pixelated was seen as worth more merit. In the end, this was a terrible terrible class. I wish it were just me who felt this way. I've had discussions with about 7 other people from the class who had a similar experience. Did I learn much? Not really. What I learned, I learned on my own without any help from the professor- and it was just technical things. The TA, Ryan, who normally is very nice (unlike final critique), was helpful and knowledgeable- so a few times when I was having issues, he helped. Bogdan is mostly useless. This class was terrible.
