This old man is on the wrong side of school, he should have retired by now. For some reason makes u memorize 1,760 words in total like as if its only his class we have work to do in. His has a total of like 7 tests and 2 midterms. Midterms can be very difficult and have little correlation with old tests. Definitely try to get a better professor, this required way too much work for just an elective. Does, care in the progress of students, go to office hours and take good notes in class, especially stuff he emphasizes.

I liked this class and Prof. Nethercut a whole lot, except for the one problem you hear all of his students complain about - his total lack of organization. His lectures are VERY confusing at first, but I started to get the hang of things after a few weeks. I was eventually able to distinguish what was likely to show up on the test from extraneous information he gave us during his many rambling tangents. The extensive review sheets he posted on the website were lifesavers. I'm not saying he was a bad teacher, though. He was often very interesting, usually extremely funny (in a jolly, old-guy sort of way), and he was very passionate about ancient Egypt. I got an A, but I'm fascinated by the class subject; I actually did the readings because I found them so interesting. Someone with a lesser interest in the subject might have a hard time getting through all the reading assignments (there are three textbooks). I would recommend this class only if you are willing to do the readings and decipher the lectures, and have a genuine interest in ancient Egypt.

Okay, so maybe I'm on the wrong side of the tide here (as one of those math people who "does" instead of "memorizes") but this course is utterly pointless. Lecture: Word, meaning. Word, meaning. Word, meaning. Exams: Word, meaning. Word, meaning. Word, meaning. Of course, it's a classics class, so Nethercut feels compelled to sprinkle tidbits about the Latin and Greek elements of various medical terms (which aren't in the book since they're not, you know, germane to the topic of the course) throughout lecture and exams. To his credit, Nethercut is NOT boring, and he does try to spice things up in lecture, but what can you do when the unique goal of the course is to memorize, memorize, memorize? Since it's a classics class, I would expect that. But a straight percentile scale? An A if you can memorize 90% of 2,000 words over the semester? It's worse than a foreign language class! I got a C, my only at Texas, and I'm proud of it, since I acknowledge that the class is completely pointless and that the grade is only indicative of my ability to reproduce portions Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary from memory. I'm not railing about Nethercut so much, because he's quite good, but DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I'm all for expanding one's horizons, but I fail to see how this course (or any other memorization course) expands anything but fatigue before exams. Note: if you're premed, absolutely nothing I just said applies to you, and in fact I recommend it, since as Nethercut says "it's most of your first year of med school." As an undergrad. In a semester. To everyone else, yes the fine arts requirement sucks, but you can pick a better class to fulfill it with.

prof nethercut is pretty interesting, but he goes off on a tangent sometimes during lectures. ALOT of notes and slides, but our TA was pretty good with keeping the course page updated with all the notes. you don't really need to read the book, but you do HAVE TO TAKE GOOD NOTES! come to lectures, and you will only need to use to book to review stuff you didn't get during lectures (i've used the book three times this semester). no hw, no final. his tests are arrange so that your highest grade will count the most, the lowest the least (out of three tests). a completion project (a survey) is worth 8% and the course instructor survey is worth 2%. pretty light course and pretty entertaining at times.

worst lectures, do not get anything from them, rambles a lot

Prof. Nethercut is quite a character! His Ancient Egypt course was very entertaining. He shows a lot of slides and his notes can seem disorganized, but if you are a good note taker then this class should be easy for you. He's very funny and his course is easy in my opinion. If you take this course upper-divison, all you have to do different from the lower-divison is write one 10 page paper about anything related to Ancient Egypt. Other than the paper, there are 3 multiple choice tests and 1 multiple choice final. It was a fun class for me.

I liked Nethercut alot. You don't necessarily have to go to class to get an A but his teaching style and great personality make it much easier to go to class than alot of other professors. I really enjoyed this class and was only 2 pts shy from an A. This class is not difficult and you come out learning something.

Not an easy course because of professor's complete lack of organization. He rambles on and on, and he constantly goes off on tangents, to where you no longer know what you're supposed to be getting out of the lecture. He's oblivious to the fact that when he rambles, we don't follow him, and also to the fact that one obscure comment in one class period will not be remembered by students weeks later during an exam. Review sheets are somewhat comprehensive, but just as everything else in this class, the sheets lack organization and ability to comprehend exactly what he wants us to know. He's a nice man, and he does try to help when he's told what he's doing wrong. But he's unable to truly correct the flaws in his lectures. Part of the reason for the lack of organization, however, I must assume came from the TA who didn't really know how to do anything - didn't know how to work Blackboard, we had to e-mail for every test grade, and response was NOT prompt. It once took over a week after the tests had been graded to find out what I had made. If you want to learn more about Egypt, I suggest you just by a nice book and watch the History Channel.

I really liked this course! Mainly because i am very interested in Ancient Egypt. I do not recommend this course for anyone who is not interested in Ancient Egypt. Nethercut is pretty hard to follow from time to time. and is handwriting is illegible. He obviously knows a great deal about the subject and wants his students to learn the material but has a hard time conveying that knowledge. I enjoyed the class and got a B with minimal effort. But, again, do not take the class if you dont have a desire to know ancient egypt.

Nethercut is very friendly and has a really positvie attitude. The class is intersting but it is very easy to get confused or completely lost. I reccomend this course if you are a good note taker. He jumps around quite a bit and goes off on tangents. Anyone can make an "A" but you really have to pay close attention in class and just study. There is also a class website with detailed reveiw sheets for the test.
