All of you complaining about his lecture quality must just not go to lecture. He explains things quite clearly, he gives pleanty of examples, and yes, he does answer questions. As for his tests not being fair, that is also crap. Look at his average grades right on this site, they arn't bad. He gives enough extra credit, and yes sometimes even curves, that if you do any studing you should be able to get at least a B. And other people, just because you are too lazy to do any homework, stop trashing this guys rep, you would do just as bad in anyone elses class because it is your fault that you are lazy, you can't expect to walk out of lecture with a perfect understanding no matter who is explaining it, you actually have to work problems. So don't fuck him, fuck you lazy bastards.

OMG he's so terrible! His most frequent answer to students' questions in class is "you should know that." In one case, he said "you should know that from 408C. i want a proof for homework by monday." I don't know how i'm going to make it through the semester. I get up at 8 MWF just to hear this bitchass cocksucker refuse to answer questions and watch him flash his coffee-stained smile. his class should be called misery 408D. I strongly advise everyone not to take his class. The TA is pretty cool...truly interested in student success and sometimes overly sympathetic. She does everything in her power to boost our grades and strengthen our understanding of the material. as for mitra, he sucks a$$, and should be fired. i hate him, as he seems to hate everyone else. what an asshole.

Don't be influenced by all the negative comments below. I dunno about lower-division math classes but when it comes to upper ones and if u wanna get an A, he's obviously one of the best choices. I took real analysis wiz him this summer. Anyone who has ever heard of the notorious reputation of this class would realize how hard it is. I was intimidated by all the comments below about him. But surprisingly, it turned out that he taught really well and made himself clear about the class contents. Also, he's extremely nice and patient during office hours. He even literally gave u solutions to the question if u ask for it. There are 3 non-accumulative tests, 25% each and homework counts for 25%. You are allowed to have homework revision and turn it back in for regrading which secures your homework grades. The tests are about fundamental concepts and it's comparatively easy. If u work hard, u'll definitely be rewarded an A and an appreciation for mathematical analysis.

He teaches well, but the subject itself is not very interesting. He will thoroughly answer every question you ask, even though most solutions can come directly from the book. He announces pop quizzes in advance, which is strange in and of itself. I guess it's just his way of screwing the people who refuse to wake that early in the morning. You need not fear, however, because his pop quizzes can be solved in teams. Trivial if you ask me. The TA sessions are helpful only if you don't understand the material. Otherwise, be prepared to review for 45 minutes. The TA also writes the weekly quizzes, which are way too easy. They are usually problems directly from the homework, and occasionally from discussion. I guess going to class everyday should secure an A, but I skipped regularly and did just as well.

Man, if it weren't for the TA, I would've been so screwed. Fuck this fucker, he can't teach worth a rat shit. Fuck him and his stupid tests.

he gives 2 part tests (half 1 day and half the next day), none of them are curved, but he is fairly generous with partial credit. often there are problems on the test which are unintentionally impossible because he hasn't worked the test himself. there are weekly quizzes and the average of those can replace your lowest test grade. i didn't find his lectures to be as bad as some people make them out to be- as long as you take iniative to do your homework and come to class everyday he's probably one of the better profs for this course.

I hated this class. Mitra can't teach... so I hope you like the book. Weekly Quizzes, made by the TA. A few really hard problems on each test.

To me, this course was my worst class out of my Fall Freshman year. This may be because I have a weak background in math. To compare, I made a 4 on the 2003 AP Calc AB test. If you find difficulty in understanding math concepts and/or calculus in general, avoid Mitra. His lectures won't explain anything so you'll be left with your textbook, which isn't much better. There are weekly quizzes. The TA makes these so whether or not these are difficult will depend, (ours were super easy ones pulled directly from the homework). We didn't have to turn any homework in. The tests were harder than the homework. There's 3 of 'em. He's put some questions on there that he hasn't worked out before. All this means is you'll know how to do the problem, but it will be a @!#$% to calculate (i.e. 11 factorial). There is a True/False portion on every test which will require you to know the concepts. Attend his lectures to avoid missing a pop quiz. There are usually no extra credit points or curves on his tests. The workload will be up to you and how much you understand tangent planes, parameterizations, and whatnot.

He seems very insecure, for starters. He didn't explain the material well. He told us he didn't grade on a curve (which to my knowledge is true). His testing style is easy, however when you can't understand what he's teaching you it doesn't make a difference. I learned a heck of a lot more at a community college when I had to retake the course.

He is kind of hard to understand. The only reason I learned anything was through my TA and discussion. However, I liked Mitra's grading style and his tests are very straight forward.
