The workload in the class in average - a homework a week and 3-4 exams over the course of the semester. If you went to all the lectures and worked on all the homeworks (go to her office hours if you have questions), then you didn't even have to study for the exam. She is a VERY good lecturer - there's no accent, rambling, or anything!! She is also very fair in her grading. By the way, I noticed the three comments saying she was horrible were written on the same day and sounds like it came from the same person. As you can see from her grading history, very few people fail or drop the course and most people get A/B.

Ignore those other one line comments regarding Dr. Harper because they are totally inaccurate and were probably all written by one very angry student. As you can see by her grade distribution, she is pretty fair and generous in assigning grades. She is a very thorough lecturer who often goes over subject material twice just to make sure the class understands. At times the class may seem even remedial, but I strongly recommend attending class despite this! I believe most of the spiteful complaints come from students who decided not to attend lecture. She covers specific proofs and examples in class that are often the bulk of exams. Failure to attend class almost gaurantees that you will not be able to perform well on these questions. However, attending class is almost a guarantee that you will receive high marks! Shinko is also a very caring professor who is genuinely interested in the success of her students, and that is something that should be applauded in today's more detached academic environment.

Harper is awesome for M 325K. Lectures are completely useless, so you really don't have to go. I would advise that instead of going to lectures go to her office hours right before the exam and listen to all the nerdy kids ask questions, because this will usually give you a pretty good idea of what will be on the test. Homework is pretty long, but really easy and worth 10%. 3 tests worth 20% and a final worth 30%. She is a very nice lady and likes her students. Do the hw, go to those office hours, and an A is pretty easy to get.

Don't take this class if you want to pass calculus. I would reccomed waiting another semester if she is your only option.

Nice lady, lots of homework. Too bad the answers aren't in the back of the book. Lots of proofs. If you study the homework, you'll do well on the exams. They aren't too bad.

Sitting in class with Mrs. Harper will make you feel like you are back in high school. The class moves at a snail's pace with the first 10 or 15 minutes of every lecture dedicated to reviewing what happened the previous lecture. I'm not sure if this is her fault, or the math department for including so little required material in the syllabus. Either way it is both refreshing and grating; a nice break from the hectic rush-rush pace of most college classes, but you may be tempted to drive your .5mm mechanical pencil through your eye the 50th time you review what a statement is. That said, I think it would be impossible for someone to be "lost" in this class. As for the teacher, she is a really nice lady who you can tell genuinely cares about her students (she brought us donuts at the final). She makes an effort to learn everyones' names and is very approachable for questions. Though her homework assignments can get ridiculously long sometimes, they are only assigned once a week and she drops 3. Her tests are pretty straightforward and grading fair, with one exception: she usually has at least one "three word answer" type question on which it is impossible to get partial credit. Missing one of those will knock your score down by 8 or 9 points. It is harsh, but they usually are not very difficult. To wrap up, great teacher, unreservedly recommended.

I don't really understand the negative comments. I had her for M 325K and thought she was great. She let me take her class without meeting the pre-req's. She really cared about my progess. Her homework is maybe a little too fair and can sometimes be completed in minutes. The longest one ever took me less than 2 hours. Her tests aren't bad. If you do well enough in her class, you can even skip the final. She even helped me in another math class during her M 325K office hours. Take her for 325 K at least. I can't speak for her calculus class.
