Dr. Carey is the most phenomenal lecturer I've EVER had. his class is well-organized yet you don't feel like it's very rigid/strict at the same time. He really knows what he's talking about and relates information to you so well. It's not an easy A, because he only took three grades (two in-class essays and one take-home paper). If you do the readings as assigned, go to class, and let him + your TA know that you're making an effort, it shouldn't be difficult to do well.

i took professor carey for 'history of the us west' and liked it. yes his lectures can be a bit dry depending on the subject, but he beats most profs. attend office hours. he's more energetic and enthusiatic.

I guess I haven't been in the same class as these other people who reviewed him. The material was just flat out boring but I don't think that's his fault- it's just not interesting stuff he has to cover. I would suggest if you're just trying to get the legislative credit we have to get, take a more interesting class to get it. Also- don't take history at 8am in the morning! I had to so I could work in the afternoons and Carey could easily put me to sleep. He seems like a nice guy, but unless you're really into history be prepared to be bored.

I completely agree that the class was completely boring and I often felt myself drifting off to sleep even in the 2pm class. If you need to take a history class for the legislative requrement do NOT take this class, you will regret it. I put countless hours into preparing myself for the exams and as well as attending all of the SI sessions and I still could not pull off an A.

Carey's an amazing professor. His lectures were always incredibly well organized and he truly knows his history. Unfortunately, he's leaving after this semester, so if you're thinking about taking his History of the US West class, I highly recommend it. Visit him during office hours and be sure he knows your name (it just about guarantees an A in the class). He makes sure his TA's are helpful and he's always willing to go out of his way to help you understand. Can't say enough about this professor, take him!
