Barchas is a great lecturer in that she has an extensive vocabularly and her lectures are amusing and informative. However the coursework is dull and hard to read. Plus Barchas is a hard-ass about grading. I probably wouldn't take this class again.

Barchas is the WORST professor I have had at UT. She doesn't really know the material that she lectures on. Her criticism is far from constructive. Most of the students in my class with her mocked her in the class discussions. We did this to her face and she didn't even realize it. Furthermore, there is no method to her grading. She'll draw smiley faces all over your paper, circle a few things, tell you it is a great paper and then give you a B. Or she will completely tear it apart without giving the student a pertinent reason. She even went so far as to tell one student, who makes all A's and is in Honors, that she had no right to be in upper division english after grading only one paper. Half of the books she made us read were not even written in the 18th century. Given that the class was over 18th century British literature, most of the students in the class found this odd. There was no way to understand how she graded papers. The first one she set students up to take a fall. She told us after the first paper, what her grammar pet peeves and do's and don't were. Some of them, were quite frankly, beyond capricious and down right ridiculous. She put some students off english altogether. If it was just me, i could rationalize my intense dislike of her. But the entire class hated her. She should not be teaching at a school of this caliber.
